Did you know that Partners in Education Haiti supports a social worker/teacher for the disabled orphans at Notre Maison’s Children’s Home in Port au Prince, Haiti?
In Haiti, disabled children are colloquially called “cocobai,” creole for worthless or disgrace. They have traditionally been hidden away or excluded. Notre Maison children have been abandoned in hospitals or on the streets. The Director of the home, Gertrude Bien-Aime, is a strong advocate for education for all. Eight years ago, she hired Gabriel Paul, a licensed social worker with training in specia education. PieH has provided the $300/month salary so that Gertrude can employ Gabriel to meet the chidrens’ special educational and emotional needs.
