Amid the current severe struggles in Haiti, PieH added 17 new scholarship recipients for the 2021-’22 school year. For the last several years, our recipients have passed their 9th-grade exam and are entering high school. Our mission is to impact the most vulnerable, and we found high-school students to be the most susceptible to drop out. Of the fifty percent of Haitian children who begin school, only twenty percent continue their education beyond the sixth grade. In the higher class grades, the cost of tuition, books, and uniforms increases. In addition, the course work becomes more complex, especially when there is little access to additional help such as libraries, computers, and parental support. Older children must help with basics at home, such as fetching water for the family, cooking, and taking care of younger siblings.
Passing their 9th-grade national exam shows that these students are serious about their studies.
Congratulations to our new students!
