Early morning of July 7, a trained armed commando group assassinated the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, and critically injured his wife in their private residence.
Partners in Education Haiti has been working in Haiti for a decade, providing access to education and basic needs for some of the most impoverished Haitians. It has not been easy work.
The assassination of President Moïse will certainly push Haiti into more chaos, intensify the political unrest, poverty, inflation, and gang violence when Covid is at an all-time high in the country with no vaccines and a lack of medical facilities.
Our students and their families are safe for now but afraid. In Haiti, safe usually means having basic needs: food, clean water, and shelter. But during the last year, safe means avoiding being kidnapped or shot at in the streets. Nevertheless, the students will continue to attend school in the Fall, one of the few constants they have in their lives and something they view as hope for their future. Hope is a powerful feeling.
This summer, while the students are out of school, we hope to provide medical, food, and housing support for our families as needed.
